Plot and Character Activities for Frindle
These are some of the resources that support the plot and character learning targets for Frindle.  You'll find the Plot Summary, Beth Newingham's Story Mountain, and the student version of the Plot Summary.  You may need to enlarge this a bit for kids.

I've also "reworked" the Character Inference sheet that Jelena shared.  There is one for Nick, one for Mrs. Granger and a generic one for later use.  There are also some nice resources from Beth Newingham that you might consider.

Consequences and Implication Anchor Charts and Rubics for Frindle
I put together this anchor chart to support the instruction of consequences and implications for the Jacob's Ladder Units.  Hopefully Calvin and Hobbes will help simplify a concept that's even hard for adults to grasp.  :-)  I'm also including the PowerPoint that was developed to help introduce the kids to the rubric and how to assess their answers for Frindle.

Nonfiction Structure
Nonfiction Structures - Anchor Charts by Beth Newingham
One-Pager of Nonfiction Structures (Matches the Anchor Charts above.)
Once again I can take little credit, but can offer links here.  These are great for teaching 3rd graders about the target of nonfiction text structures (description, compare/contrast, sequential, problem/solution, cause/effect).  I have also been working to get sample texts of each so that you can have them readily available to show the kids.  Let me know when you are ready and I'll get you the pdf files you'll need.

Nonfiction Text Features for 2nd Grade
Here are links anchor charts based on the book Fossils as well as a quiz answer sheet and a quiz of the different features.  I can also loan you the entire book to use with your students.

Nonfiction Text Features for 3rd Grade
These links are similar but slightly different to the 2nd grade features.  These are based on a book called The Biography of Silk.  I do take the opportunity to tell the kids that I DO NOT like the title of the book because by using the word biography I believe they confuse kids about nonfiction.  But, the book is well designed and based on an interesting topic.  Remember this is just an introduction to the features.  If you are planning a nonfiction unit around a different topic I can easily change the anchor charts to reflect that.

Rafts: Differentiating Written Responses
RAFT: A Writing Strategy
The 4th and 5th graders are learning to understand their role as a writer and the audience they will address.  The RAFT writing strategy is fresh way to approach writing.  It requires students' critical thinking skills as they connect their imagination to the new information they have learned.  RAFTS can be used in any subject--reading, math, science, or social studies.

A Short Paragraph to Informally Assess Inference
"He pulled his reindeer coat around his shoulders. He was glad to have his sealskin boots and his heavy trousers to guard him against the stinging wind. He snapped the whip and the dogsled took off with a jolt. Where does the man live?"
